There Are Three Methods of Detoxification

Detoxification, at the core of good health

Cleansing the body from the inside, or detoxification, is critical to optimal health. Don't thing you are toxic... consider this. Do you eat fast food, processed food, or foods grown with pesticides? Have you taken Tylenol, Advil, cough syrup, antibiotics or cold medication? Do you drink beer, wine or soda? If you are alive, you are exposed to toxins. Period! Air pollution, GMO foods, petroleum based lotions and creams, medications, including over the counter medications, all contribute to our toxic levels. This places a tremendous stress on your liver, kidneys, colon, lungs and other organs in the body. Toxins lead to numerous disease processes in the body.

There are many ways to support the body, release toxins, improve your health and feel better through detoxification protocols. The three that we imploy most here at Be Well Western Carolina are:

The Ionic Detoxifying Footbath

Bring your body back to a state of harmony and balance.

Children are taught the importance of hygiene, washing their hands and bathing to keep their bodies clean and prevent illness. Cleansing the inside of our bodies to remove toxins is what detoxifying Ionic footbaths are all about.

Today our toxic exposure is at an all-time high. Toxins come from many sources. Our foods are sprayed with pesticides; our water has chlorine and fluoride; the air we breathe is polluted; and our cleaning supplies, soaps, shampoos and detergents are loaded with chemicals. Metals, such as mercury fillings, lead, arsenic, and aluminum; common household items such as adhesives, paints, and even the plastic used in microwaves; drugs we inject and ingest such as vaccinations, tobacco, and even prescription and over-the-counter drugs all contribute to more toxins in our bodies that may lead to dis-ease. Even some allergies; mental incapacitation; and side effects like swelling, rashes, insomnia, headaches, fatigue and pain are all clear examples of dis-ease.

Detox foot baths are extremely beneficial for the following 7 reasons:

  1. Enhancing the immune system
  2. Assist in recovery time from injuries and surgery
  3. Can relieve pain and joint stiffness due to arthritis
  4. Improves sleep pattern
  5. Remove heavy metals
  6. Removes blood clot material
  7. Improve liver and kidney function

The Dry Skin Brushing

Dry Skin Brushing is an easy, yet extremely effective, technique in detoxification.

Many people carefully tend to the skin on their face: regularly exfoliating, cleansing, and moisturizing. But when's the last time you tended to the skin on the rest of your body?

Your skin is your largest organ, and we should be concerned about our skin as much as we are about what is going inside of our bodies. There is one simple step you can add to your morning routine that can greatly improve its health – dry skin brushing.

I'm not only referring to your skin's aesthetic appearance, either (although many would agree this is important to). The benefits of dry skin brushing go beyond just the skin; it offers whole-body benefits to your health.

It is of utmost important that we are aware of WHAT we put on our skin, as this may increase the toxic overload already in the body. Reviewing the label of skin care moisturizers and cosmetics are essential. If the ingredients are something you wouldn’t eat, then don’t put it on your skin. For example, there are many lotions containing petroleum products. You wouldn’t eat petroleum, but it is found in most lotions.

Our skin is responsible for one quarter of the body’s detoxification each day. It eliminates over one pound of waste acids every day, in the average adult; most of this through the sweat glands.

Yes, dry brushing could improve our skin; however the benefits are much greater than just that, alone.

Benefits of Dry Brushing include:

  • Reduces cellulite
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system
  • Exfoliation, removes dead skin layers
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Stimulates the hormone and oil-producing glands
  • Tightens the skin preventing premature aging
  • Tones the muscles
  • Stimulates the circulation
  • Improves the function of the nervous system
  • Improves digestion and kidney function
  • Reduces Stress
  • It’s easy, inexpensive and invigorating!

"I've only been at this for about two weeks, but I've already experienced many of the benefits listed above. For one thing, dry skin brushing just feels really good. It's one of those miraculous practices that manages to be both relaxing and energizing all at the same time. For another, it cured my cellulite! …Dry skin brushing also helped heal some ingrown hairs and some innocuous though unsightly bumps on my arms. My skin is softer and no longer dry or flakey. Additionally, though I'm not sure whether or not it's related to dry skin brushing, I must say that I've been sleeping better and experiencing less 'brain fog' throughout the day!"

Try it… you might just get hooked!

Oil Pulling

Detoxification, at the core of good health

Oil pulling is an age-old remedy that uses natural substances to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. It has the added effect of whitening teeth naturally and evidence even shows that it is beneficial in improving gums and removing harmful bacteria!

The practice of oil pulling started in India thousands of years ago, and from my research, was first introduced to the United States in the early 1990s by a medical doctor named Dr. F. Karach, who used it with success in his medical practice.

How Oil Pulling Works

  1. Put 1-2 teaspoons of oil into the mouth. I prefer to use 2 teaspoons of organic coconut oil. I scoop it out as a solid and let it melt in my mouth before swishing. I also pour a few drops of Brushing Blend (naturally antibacterial) into the mix. Brushing Blend is a blend of essential oils in an almond oil base. The essential oils are cinnamon, peppermint, spearmint, clove myrrh and manuka.
  2. Swish for 20 minutes. Timing is key, as this is long enough to break through plaque and bacteria but not long enough that the body starts re-absorbing the toxins and bacteria. Use the “sip, suck and pull through the teeth” motion for fifteen to twenty minutes. This process makes the oil thoroughly mix with saliva, creating a mouthwash like effect in your mouth. Swishing activates the enzymes, which draw toxins out of the blood; bacteria and plaque from the mouth tongue, gums and teeth; and creates a healthier mouth environment. The oil will get thicker and milky, as it mixed with saliva, during this time, and it should be creamy-white when it is spit out. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic.
  3. Spit oil into the trash can. Especially if you have a septic system like I do… don’t spit into the sink! Do not swallow the oil, as it is hopefully full of bacteria and toxins that are now not in the mouth!
  4. Rinse well with warm water. Warm water seems to clean the mouth better (my opinion). I swish a few times with warm water to get any remaining oil out of my mouth.
  5. Brush well. I prefer to brush with Brushing Blend to make sure any remaining bacteria is killed.
Oil pulling is easy to do this with coconut oil and brushing blend, each morning before breakfast. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and has a milder taste than other oils and is recommended by oral health experts

Benefits of Oil Pulling

Aside from getting your mouth super-clean, what are the other benefits can you expect from oil pulling?

The most touted reports include:

  • increased overall oral health
  • decreased plaque and bacteria build up
  • whiter teeth
  • decreased sensitivity
  • elimination of halitosis (bad breath)
  • decreased cavities
  • improvement and elimination of gingivitis
  • also benefits the health of the jaw and the throat
  • eliminates chapped lips and dry mouth

In addition, there are hundreds of testimonials online from people who have experienced benefits from oil pulling. These benefits include, help with skin conditions, arthritis, asthma, headaches, hormone imbalances, infections, liver problems and more. As toxins are pulled from the blood, it’s no wonder that other health challenges improve.

If you suffer from any of the mentioned oral ailments and are looking to supplement your mouth cleaning routine, oil pulling may be the step you’ve been missing! While this may not be the solution to all your dental problems, a 10 to 20 minute oil pull could help create a healthier, happier you!
