When it comes to health, hormones play a big part.
A hormone is a chemical messenger produced in a complex process by the adrenal glands, the hypothalamus, pituitary, liver, pancreas, ovaries, testes and thyroid. They are dependent on beneficial fats and cholesterol. When the diet lacks these important nutrients, hormone problems are a result, because the body doesn’t have the building blocks necessary to make them.
Hormones travel in your bloodstream to tissues and organs. They work slowly, over time, and affect many different processes, including metabolism, sexual function, reproduction, mood and much more.
When we think of hormones we think primarily of the reproductive hormones, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The truth is these are only a few of the hormones produced in the body. For example, the Thyroid gland produces hormones that help maintain weight, proper temperature of the body and heart rate. The Adrenal glands produce hormones that help the body control blood sugar, burn protein and fat, react to stressors like a major illness or injury, and regulate blood pressure.
